Brent Alloway
Brent Alloway (BSc. Hons., PhD) is a former Associate-Professor of Quaternary earth science and volcanology at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand (2009-2016) and was New Zealand’s Chief Volcanologist at GNS-Science (1998-2003). In between years, Brent was an exploration geologist based in Ecuador and part of the small team to discover the Fruta del Norta epithermal gold deposit – then – the largest gold deposit discovery in South America in over two decades.
Brent is a very experienced earth scientist having conducted research-based fieldwork and consultancy in many areas of the world and is particularly interested in natural hazards, landscape histories, paleoenvironmental change, volcanism and human origins. Brent’s diverse earth science expertise is reflected in his authorship of >102 scientific journal articles and 26+ commercial client reports and maps – many journal articles of which are now highly cited. In 2009, Brent received the McKay Hammer Award from the NZ Geological Society in recognition for meritorious research contribution to NZ geology.
As well as working as a geoconsultant, Brent remains involved in collaborative geological research and currently holds formal adjunct professorial positions at Auckland University (New Zealand), the University of Wollongong, NSW (Australia) and Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile in Santiago (Chile).

New Zealanders co-existing with the threat of natural hazards is nothing new – over our history we’ve dealt with devastating earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions. Coastal hazards have always created unforeseen problems since 75% of New Zealanders live within 0.5 km of these dynamic and ever-changing coastal areas.
Our geohazard assessment focus is primarily directed towards identifying your coastal hazard exposure (i.e. potential asset damage and loss resulting from storm-wave inundation and flooding, sea-level-rise and erosion, landslides and rock-falls).
However, our geoconsultants also investigate inland hazards (relating to slope stability and fault delineation) and are able to conduct high-resolution soil-landscape mapping for horticultural and viticultural development.
